Hot Air Balloon Painting
Photography from Israel
During this quarter I traveled to Israel and took many pictures. Besides documenting what I saw in this beautiful country I focused on taking good pictures and composition.
Nell Propst Art Contest
This piece was created for the Nell Propst Art Contest. It depicts the Pawnee buttes, a farm field, pronghorn, and an old rusted out car. This piece is designed to be the cover of this Northeast Colorado Local History Contest Publication. The cover piece accompanies several essays written by people my age in the publication.
For this quarter I decided to paint. I drew outlines with paper and pencils. Then I painted them on two canvases I had. My inspiration for my painting was fantasy. The first painting is a castle in a village in a clearing. The second painting was inspired by vikings, norse mythology, and nature.
The Golden Mountain
For this project, I drew inspiration from various mythologies from around the world and practiced drawing locations based on myths. The myth I chose for my final project is a russian folktale called the Golden Mountain. The folktale is about a clever young man who squandered all his money so he goes to a marketplace to find work. A golden carriage pulls up and everyone but the young man flees. The man in the carriage hires the young man, and they sail together to an island with a massive golden mountain, and an exquisite castle at its foot. The rich man treated the young man very well for the first day, and the rich man’s daughter gave the young man a flint and steel as a gift. The next day the two men journey to the foot of the mountain. The rich man give the young man a drink for courage which ends up knocking out the young man. The rich man then kills a lame horse and stuffs the young man inside it. Crows are attracted to the decaying horse, and carry it to the top of the mountain. Once the young man comes to on the top of the mountain, he is instructed by the rich man to begin digging for gold, and tossing it down to the rich man. Once the rich man has enough gold he leaves the young man on the top of the mountain, which the young man cannot descend because it would be certain death. The the young man uses the flint and steel the rich man’s daughter gives him and summons two magical people that take him to the bottom of the mountain. He escapes the island and goes back to the marketplace where he first met the rich man. He tricks the rich man into drinking a spiked potion, and puts the rich man inside a dead horse. The rich man is carried to the top of the mountain. The young man tells the rich man that if he mines enough gold the young man will tell the rich man how to leave the mountain. But the young man does not tell the rich man how to leave the mountain, and the young man makes off with 12 wagons full of gold and marries the rich man’s daughter.
The goal of this project was to get betting at creating environments and scenery. I used acrylic paint on watercolor paper. I think it was pretty successful, considering my small amount of experience painting. The most important part is that i got better at creating interesting environments. Overall the project was successful.
